It is now recognized that diffuse reflectance spectroscopy is a very useful companion technique to transmission spectroscopy. Not only can it provide absorption data in some cases where transmission measurements fail, but for many industrial and research applications, it may in fact be the preferred technique… This multi-directional scattered reflection is known as diffuse reflectance. In DRS, a beam of light from a UV, visible, or IR spectrophotometer strikes the sample, and the intensity of diffusely reflected light is measured over a range of wavelengths. Light absorption by sample components reduces the amount of light reflected.

diffuse reflectance method is used without question to obtain approximate absorption spectra of solids in the visible and near UV, or in which attempts are made to overcome the recognized limitations of the method, namely, that diffuse reflectance spectra are not always identical to transmission spectra.. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has found its application in a number of areas. The first and still most prominent is in the field of color measurement and color matching. The paper, paint, dye, textile, printing, and ceramics industries have made use of this technique for the measurement of color in routine quality-control functions as early.
